About the Bedford Road School Parent Teacher Association

 

Membership in the Bedford Road School PTA is open to anyone who believes in the Mission and Purposes of National Parent Teacher Association. Individual members may belong to any number of PTAs and pay dues in each. Every person who joins the BRS PTA automatically becomes a member of both the state and National PTAs.

Together we are a powerful voice for children.

 

WHAT DOES THE BRS PTA DO?

 

 

Ø      Manage grade-specific enrichment programs with BRS Curriculum Coordinator

·         Kindergarten Main Street Math

·         Grade 1 Explorations

·         Grade 2 Math Mania

·         Grade 3 Mathletics

·         Grade 4 Teamwork Counts

·         Grade 4 Revolutionary Day

 

Ø      With the BRS Cultural Arts Coordinator, select arts-related (dance, music, authors) programs to be presented to students.

·         Gary Krinsky, Toying with Science

·         Peter Lourie, Hudson River Adventure

·         Jan Reynolds, Vanishing Cultures

·         Ted Scheu, the Poetry Guy

·         Bubble Mania

·         Author visits/signings

 

Ø      Organize and run the Write Away Program, where each class at BRS creates a collaborative, progressive group story.

 

Ø      Run various Special Needs programs

·         Liaison between BRS PTA and SEPTA PTA

·         Coordinate Walk in My Shoes grades 3 & 4

·         Bring East Coast Assistance Dogs to BRS

·         Hold assemblies related to Special Needs issues (Down’s Syndrome, etc.)

 

Ø      Organize and run Student and Staff Picture Day and Retakes Day

·         Hire and coordinate photography studio

·         Bill, sort, and deliver photographs to each BRS family and staff member

 

Ø      Assist BRS with the Class Plays

·         Each class receives a donation for sets, costumes, props from the PTA each year.

·         Coordinate with BRS teachers the audio/visual recording of each Class Plays

·         Copy and distribute class play DVDs

·         Collect fees for DVDs

 

Ø      Edible Garden

·         Organize seasonal garden plantings and harvests with parents, students, BRS teachers

·         Coordinate events and tastings with Nutrition and Curriculum PTA committees

·         Publish Edible Garden newsletter

 

Ø      Help promote healthy foods and snacks through the Nutrition Committee

·         Coordinate monthly tastings with School Cafeteria Staff and Edible Garden

·         Educate students about Nutrition during Harvest Week and Nutrition Month

·         Work with School Cafeteria Staff to offer healthy choices on school menu

 

Ø      Host an annual Book Fair with the Pleasantville Village Bookstore.

·         All teachers and the library receive book donations from the PTA.

·         Event also is a PTA fundraiser.

·         We work the Pleasantville Village Bookstore, supporting our local economy.

 

Ø      Coordinate Earth Day events and drives

·         Grade-wide assemblies about helping our environment

·         Parent readings of environment-themed books during library time

·         Nike Reuse-A-Shoe drive

·         With Edible Garden, planting seeds in recycled milk cartons

·         No Trash Lunch Day

 

Ø      Organize and run Fun Fair, a PTA “Thank You” for the community’s ongoing support of BRS. Activities include:

·         Fortune Teller

·         Games

·         Food

·         Entertainment

·         Crafts Prizes

·         Face Painting

 

Ø      Run lice checks (with the school nurse) after long school breaks to eliminate school-wide outbreaks.

 

Ø      Organize Lost and Found items, and coordinate getting these items back to students.

 

Ø      Run the Panther Pantry

·         A place parents and caregivers can buy snacks, drinks, and BRS gear in the BRS playground after school.

 

Ø      Organize and order School Supplies packages for all grades

·         Coordinate the sale and distribution of supplies to BRS families

 

Ø      Teacher Sunshine Committee and Teacher Appreciation Week

·         Prepare and give gifts/cards/other for BRS staff and teachers on holidays, life events, and other special events

·         Coordinate week-long activities (breakfasts, luncheons) and donations

 

Ø      Organize and produce BRS Yearbook

 

Ø      Work with the school to coordinate and host BRS special events

·         New Student Orientation

·         Back-to-School Nights

·         Welcome Back Coffee

·         Peek into Kindergarten

·         BRS 5-Year Birthday Celebration

·         Pajama Night at BRS

·         Grade 4 Graduation

·         Field Day

·         Class Picnics

 

Ø      Hold fun, community-wide fundraising sales of:

·         Baked goods (made by BRS PTA members and teaching staff)

·         BRS Apparel (designed by BRS PTA members)

·         Citrus

·         Gift Wrap

·         Children’s Art Note Cards

·         Box Tops coupons and Nestle labels (redeem for school funds)

 

Ø      Offer informative meetings every other month, with special guest speakers

·         Lisa Rodriguez, BRS Curriculum Coordinator and Extended Learning Specialist

·         The Online Mom

·         School District Administrators (budget, other concerns)

 

Ø      Coordinate Grade Reps and Class Parents; liaison between BRS Admin and Grade Reps/Class Parents

 

Ø      Organize and publish BRS PTA Student Directory

 

Ø      Attend Board of Ed. meetings and report relevant info. at PTA meetings

 

Ø      Provide food and beverages for PTA and some BRS meetings

 

Ø      Collect PTA membership dues and maintain membership records

 

Ø      Liaison with the BRS Student Council/Grade Reps

 

Ø      Create and maintain the BRS PTA website, www.pvillebrspta.org.
